about

I live in an area of Bristol called Lockleaze, which was developed as a new council housing estate in post war Britain. The name comes from the farm that was once in the area. The name Lockleaze comes from Anglo Saxon and means something along the lines of 'a fold in a field or pastureland'.

I took these rural origins as inspiration for this series, taking my theme from a piece called 'Awakening' by American composer Joseph Curiale, which is about the rhythms of life in farming and nature. The theme is the opening trumpet melody from the first movement of the piece, called 'Compassion'. I liked this because when I started making this series, at the very beginning of the UK Lockdown of 2020, it genuinely felt like a new age of increased compassion in this country.

Each piece in the series features a field recording from somewhere in the area, with music composed around and inspired by the theme surrounding it.
